A bit of info to let you know what it's going to be like.
Once you've been through the fairly simple registration process, you get the following menu options:
Match Lobby
Quick Match
Network Options
Information
Logout
You have 10 main servers with 10 lobby's off of each of them. You can browse most of them at will, though some are locked dependant on your place in the rankings. You can also have a 'Quick Match', which just grabs you an opponent at random.
To counter any lag that may occur, at half time you get swapped around, so nobody hosts for the whole game. So it kind of evens it up a little.
There's a basic set of phrases you can use to communicate quickly, though you can edit them to what ever you like. This can be either amusing or extremely annoying, dependant on whether you're playing me or not. :D And obviously you also have the option to input text via the gamepad as well if you want, at half time or full time.
At the moment the PESFan refs are the only people in the world on the thing, so it's a bit lonely. Though it has enabled us to establish that i'm a bit rubbish. Hope to see you all on there in a few weeks though.

Depends who you play. Playing TheBoss whilst he uses his internet connection to try to control the world from his tower a mile above the centre of the earth results in some lag.
Only had a couple of games where it really had an effect on the outcome though...

Lag, so long as theres not much going on on your connection and its a reasonable speed (512k dsl) it seems fine to me :)
I've had a few games on a shared 512k without many (few while pc was downloading something) issues :)

I'm same as Kopite am looking into this and have never used my ps2 for online play.
I need to by an adapter i assume.
Then can i just use my ntl connection or do ntl need to change anything? Just a case of plugging in the ethernet cable? How much bandwidth does it use as ntl are capping me soon :(
Cheers for any info :)

Does your internet provider need to do anything to your connection?
Or is it just a normal internet connection using ethernet.
I use ntl and have a cable modem and connect my computer to that with an ethernet cable. So i unplug it form my computer and plug it into the adaptor in my ps2 and away i go. How i register etc then?
Anyone else use a normal NTL broadband connection to do this?
Cheers :)

to get ya ps2 online you need:
1. Broadband - not AOL coz their crap and won't let ya play ps2 online!
2. A router for your broadband - ethernet cable to your pc(s) and another for your ps2
3. If you got a slim ps2 then you already got the ethernet socket on the back. Old ps2 owners (like me) should have the network adaptor
4. Plug your ps2 into your router, run the Network CD supplied with the ps2 network adaptor, and AWAY YOU GO!!
Come on PES5!!!! Can't wait!!

yes its that easy - i don't use NTL myself, but its the same idea as my setup here - plug, follow the network setup (auto auto auto) and play
as for playing your mate, you will be able to find him on the online system - one of you creates a match, the other joins - simple :)

Yes, you will be able to play anyone, anywhere in the world, as long as they got a good broadband connection. Not sure how PES5 will work online yet, whether you'll be able to search and invite your mates to play you but you'll most definately be able to play other peeps from around the world!

Few questions regarding gameplay:
1) Is it manual cursor setting or semi auto cursor setting?
2) Can you see the quality of the persons connection? e.g. in fifa you have 4 bars which indicates the quality of the persons connection, if all 4 bars are full then it means that person has a quality connection.
Please answer these or try to, thanks

To me it's absolutely stupid to have one person host one half and the other person host the other half. Adsl would have to be supported well or so many people are never going to get a decent game.

do any of you guys have the PS2 mic headset??
I dont think I've seen it being mentioned
Senden
07-10-2005, 11:52 PM
I heard somewhere that the mic isn't supported and to be honest, i am not suprised. Adding a chat function would just add to the potential lag you would get and besides it's a football game, you don't need to chat really unless your doing a 4 v 4 or something ( 2 v 2 wouldn't matter as you can have a half decent idea of what your teamate will do.)

ok ok, cant u just put the network adaptor in the back of my ps2, then get the cable which plugs straight into the socket in the wall and go thru that, rather than going thru the pc, and i use a local service for my broadband, called karoo (www.karoo.co.uk) will this matter?

i wil have to apologise for the negativity in advance but i have a feeling that konami will let us down again with the whole design of the online game.... i felt that they should have adopted the framework of topspin the tennis game which had a great ranking system and had countered lag issues quite well with bars to indicate the players ping... lessons that konami should have learnt a long time ago......

Internet Connection Sharing I think.
Yes that is correct, it is used to connect your PC directly to your Console with a crossover cable. You should get one of these if you have a USB modem and don't want to shell out loads of money for an ethernet one.
To do ICS it's simply right click on your internet connection (can be found by going to start and then connect to,) after you right click choose the properties option. Then if you go onto the advanced tab you should see a box you can check which will allow your computer to share the connection.

According to the manual you should enter one of the lobbies to enter MATCH ROOM. In Match Room you should see LEFT of the player-name some kind of bar, which indicates the lag.
Can you find that?
So if you are here:
http://www.darrian.dds.nl/bb/lobby01.JPG
You enter MATCH ROOM at the left top you should be able to find them :)
If so, this is what it means:
A green full bar means no lag. Yellow means slight lag (not suitable for 2 vs 2). Red means not suited for any play and no bar means the server was't able to read and calculate lag.
Please let us know if it's there :)

Aha! That's what it is. It tells you the quality of the player's connection if they are not already playing a game. I've mine and someone else's while they are waiting for a match. i.e. the greyed out boxes are those currently playing each other.
To pick someone to play, create a match room (choice of name, password and match length) then wait for someone to challenge you.

Get broadband, you'll get a router or modem. Routers allow seperate connections to be running of the same broadband connection i.e. 2 house pc's or like me, a pc, xbox and ps2.
TimIgoe
08-10-2005, 05:11 PM
Routers 'route' traffic to the right machine, they will allow you to have more than one PC on your dsl connection as the will route traffic from internal to external and back again :)
They also add an extra layer of security to a home user by stopping traffic at the router and not letting it up to the pcs :)

Will you have to be in Europe to play PES 5 online?
I'm asking because I play Pro Evo on a European PS2 (with a multi-system TV), but I'm currently in North America.
I'm guessing that you'll not be able to play PES 5 online in North America. It has something to do with servers, I believe.
I think I read somewhere that Winning Eleven 8 Liveware Evolution's online play only worked in Japan. Although some computer-savy people might have figured out a way around this.
But I'm not computer-savy. :(

is this possible

http://walter.sb-1.net/bb/pf/pes5-ranking/2.JPG
After watching closer to this picture I have my doubts that the elo-system is used.
You said they subtract points if you loose and subtract more points if you lose against a weaker player, right? Just watch the score from number one placed in that table and number three. Number one did win a lot, but those 32 defeats shoud bring his rating down again. Number three has a superior percentage of wins and shoud be higher on the list as the current number one. Still number one has twice as much points!
So please do us a favor and when you go playing again will you write down this:
A: your rating before the match and your new rating after the match.
B: Same for your opponent.
C: Result of the match.
That way we can figure out how this system works.
Will you do that for us? Would be very helpful :)

But if number three is winning against weaker opponents then his score would not go up as much, as it goes up more the higher ranked your opponent. It's also going to be a bit weird at the moment, cos you only have about 15 people on the rankings. Until there's hundreds of people on there the table won't be v. accurate. For example, i'm third best in the world, and yet anyone who's played me would tell you i'm complete gash....:D

You certainly can be right about this, but I find the score from number one very high compared with the others, which points to his number of games.
In the ELO-rating system you have an accurate rating after about 20 games, so the rating of number three should be accurate now. But that is not the case if you see the score of him, compared to that from number one..
That's why I ask you and others if you will be so kind to write down the data I mentioned in my previous post. In that case we can figure it out :)

Do you get points for a draw?

I think the lower ranked player might get points.
I understand that - at half time - the host is swapped over. But i guess the initial host (of the 1st half) sets the game conditions ? eg - weather, time of day/night, game length etc.
Also can you use an option file with it? Or just the default one :)

At half time, the host switches to make it fair.
Initial host sets the game conditions(weather, condition, time etc)
It uses default option file(default kits and default names)

Do you HAVE to switch?

Do you HAVE to switch?
It's automatic, haven't seen anything to keep the same host.

You have no choice.
Besides, it's the fairest way
Do you HAVE to switch?
Well in the past the host used to have an advantage, because they got less lag :)
So people preferred to host than join games.
So i think this way is alot fairer.

Yeah I guess, but say a 8mb player was playing a 1mb player, wouldn't it be more fair to let the 8mb player stay host?
:undecide:
Thanks for all the stuff btw, can't wait to get online
There are 10 main servers, with 10 rooms in each yeah?
Any estimation to how many people each server can hold?

So with it having different lobbies, can you create a room for example call it pesfans cup.. then have people join and play games from within that room, and each score is logged into a table/ranking table even?
is this possible
if it is then that will be superb!
can anyone answer that please, as there was talk about having online leagues etc, is this true!
does anyone know if you can do this

1000 to a server tlt
Bailes/techmob
nope you just set up games in a lobby for now.
The actual rankings etc are done seperately. However, watch this space for more details on cups etc
1000 to a server tlt
Cheers - iv no idea how many will want to play online at any one time, but 1000 per server sounds a fair amount !!

So it's not possible to use a modified OF, even if both would agree?

I dont think so - that was the case on the xbox/pc so i think it will be the same.

How is lag compare to pes4 pc version?
dragonskin
09-10-2005, 05:21 PM
It depends on who you play against, but I don't think it's as bad so far, but it might change when the game actually gets released :cheesy:
Senden
09-10-2005, 06:12 PM
It couldn't possibly be as bad as PES4 or they wouldn't let you change hosts at half time.
If they did, adsl users would totally and utterly ruin the whole game for everyone.
